What is a hybrid heat pump system?

A hybrid heat pump system combines a heat pump with another heat source, such as a gas boiler to provide reliable heating and hot water all year in more challenging retrofit situations. The operation of a hybrid is managed by a central controller which can vary the operation mode to optimise heat pump share to promote carbon and cost savings i.

The heat pump can meet the bulk of demand with the boiler working to support demand in peak, cold winter conditions thereby alleviating the need for extensive heating system or fabric upgrades. When the system comprises a combination boiler the need to fit a hot water cylinder in the property is also removed. Hybrids offer a flexible solution for older and less thermally efficiency properties which make up a large proportion of the UK housing stock ii.
