What is the coefficient of performance (COP) of an air source heat pump?

An air source heat pump’s COP is the ratio of useful heating provided to the energy consumed. 

What size hot water cylinder do I need for a 2 or 3 bed house?

Though the usage varies, there is a general rule of thumb you can use for getting the right size cylinder for your home, usually between 45-60 litres of water per occupant. A two-bedroom home (2–3 occupants) typically requires a cylinder that holds between 120 and 180 litres and three-bedroom homes (3–4 occupants) typically need a cylinder that holds between 180 and 240 litres.

Can an air source heat pump improve my EPC rating?

According to the UK government’s Simple Energy Advice website, installing an ASHP in a typical four-bedroom detached house could improve the property’s EPC rating from a D to a B, potentially saving homeowners up to £1,300 per year on their energy bills.

What size air source heat pump do I need?

When talking about the size of an air source heat pump, we’re actually referring to the power output, measured in kilowatts (kW) rather than its physical size. The output your heat pump will need to deliver depends on unique aspects of your home, such as:

  • The size and layout of your property
  • Occupancy and average heating usage
  • How old your property is
  • Quality of insulation
  • Type of windows
  • Your desired indoor temperature 

These, naturally, will be different for everyone, so be sure that you assess all of these carefully with your installer.

What temperature should my boiler be set at?

Typically, your boiler should be set to at least 65 degrees Celsius to prevent bacteria growing in the water and maintaining comfort.
