Baxter's mission to help you save energy at home

Baxter has come up with some easy ways for you to save energy at home. With most of us looking to do our bit for the environment, finding ways to cut down on energy consumption is a good first step that can also help in reducing the cost of energy bills.

Saving energy doesn’t necessarily have to be difficult either. Take a look at Baxter’s easy tips to lower your energy use.

Tip #1

Only heat the rooms in use

Baxter's Top Tip

Try only heating the rooms that you are using at that moment and turn down the radiator valves in rooms that are not in use.

Tip #2

Air dry for sustainability

Cool off!

If you have a hot water cylinder in place, bring the temperature down to around 60 degrees Celsius / 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This will help your cylinder do its job, without having to work as hard, and ultimately, keep your costs down.

Don’t turn the temperature down any lower, as this could cause the growth of harmful bacteria in your system.

A well-fitted jacket for your hot water cylinder keeps your water hotter for longer. That means that your boiler won’t need to work as hard to heat it up, which can save money in the long run.

Make sure your cylinder is maintained regularly and is well-insulated to ensure it works at the best possible level.

Consider using a clothes horse or washing line instead of the radiator or tumble dryer. This is not only better for your clothes, but could save you around £70 on your energy bills!

Tip #3

Keeping the heat in

Filter it out

Keep your boiler clear of debris by having a magnetic filter fitted. This protects the boiler system from damage caused by small fragments of magnetic materials and ultimately, keeps it running efficiently.

Removing debris also means that your boiler doesn’t have to work harder to overcome blockages that the debris can cause. As a result, you won’t waste energy and the risk of having to fork out for expensive repairs is much less.

Make sure to carry out an annual service on your boiler to keep warranties up to date and the system in top condition. A regular maintenance plan also identifies problem areas before they escalate. Prevention is better than cure!

Switch it off!

Choosing to switch off appliances and TVs at the socket when they’re not in use can be a simple but effective way of saving money on your electricity bill.

Lighting makes up around 11% of a typical power bill, so turning the lights off in rooms that you are not using could be an effective way to conserve energy. Better yet, consider switching to LED bulbs which use around 70% less energy than standard lightbulbs.

Unplug your phone or laptop charger once your device is finished charging to protect the battery and look after your energy usage. Switching off your appliances and devices instead of leaving them on standby could save around £45 per year!

Smart meters are ideal for finding the best energy tariff based on your actual energy use – no need to submit a meter reading or guess how much you’re using!
