Winter heating myths explained
Now that the distinctive chill of winter is in the air, many of us are feeling that urge to crank up the heating. But could you be wasting heat, energy and money?
Let’s take a look at some of the common winter heating myths you might have heard and what you should be doing instead in order to maximise the effectiveness of your heating throughout the season.
Leaving the heating on low all day
This is one of the more common questions people ask about heating during winter. It’s also one that doesn’t have a straightforward answer, with arguments for and against scattered across the Internet.
However, the Energy Saving Trust advises that leaving the heating on all day, even on a low setting, consumes more energy, wastes more heat, and therefore, adds to the cost of your bills. Using a timed thermostat to only heat your property when you need it is a more effective and efficient method.
Turning up the thermostat to heat the house quicker
This will make the system run for longer and uses more energy. Your boiler will work at the same speed regardless of which temperature you set the thermostat to.
It’s best to set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature – usually between 18 and 21 degrees – and let your system do the work. The rate in which your home heats up depends on the output of your boiler, rather than how high you have your thermostat.

Closing internal doors to keep heat in
There is an argument to suggest that keeping your doors closed will retain the heat in rooms that you aren’t using. While this does sound logical, and may have some short-term benefits, closing doors may also disrupt airflow and lead to temperature inconsistencies throughout your home. Cold, unheated rooms can also encourage mould growth due to condensation.
Consider using thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) or smart technology as options for consistent heating instead.

Heat only escapes through windows and doors
While a fair amount of heat is lost through these two areas, it is also lost through the roof and the loft. Investing in adequate insulation can help keep your energy use down and potentially reduce your energy bills.
It may be worth looking into any grants that your local council has to help with the cost of home modifications such as insulation and double glazing. For example, the Warm Homes: Local Grant may be an option if you need help with the cost of energy efficient home improvements but be sure to check the eligibility criteria carefully.
