The questions to ask after your heat pump has been installed

Having an air source heat pump (ASHP) fitted at your property can lead to long-term savings on energy bills and reduce your environmental impact.

Every home is unique, which is why we want to help you feel confident in knowing as much as possible about how your heat pump works once the installation is finished.

Read on to learn some of the important questions to ask your installer:

•    How to set a heat pump’s thermostat
•    How a heat pump will work in different weather conditions
•    What maintenance checks you need to carry out
•    What to do if you’re on holiday or away from home

Common questions around ASHP installation - ask your air source heat pump installer - Baxi

How to set a heat pump’s thermostat

ASHPs are designed to deliver a constant level of heating that you are comfortable with. The approach to heating your home will likely change. Rather than turning the heat pump on and off, ask your installer to show you how to set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature, usually a pleasant ambient warmth of between 18 and 22°C, so that you can have consistent comfort throughout your home.

Your installer can also show you how to choose a ‘setback’ temperature, which allows the heat pump to continue running at a lower temperature when there is less demand, without having to turn it off altogether. This is also a good option for when you’re away on holiday or a trip away; your heat pump will keep working without using excessive energy, and ensure your home is at a comfortable temperature when you return.

A smart thermostat can also give you greater control over your heating schedules and make adjustments based on your needs.

How a heat pump works in all weather conditions

A correctly designed and configured air source heat pump will work in all weather conditions, even during the winter months when there is less warmth for it to draw on. In colder weather, the heat pump will use a defrost cycle to keep the system clear of frost and ice, though it’s important to clear away other potential blockages, such as leaves and debris.

Ask your installer to go through how the defrost cycle works and what else you can do to ensure your heat pump works during different times of the year.

The maintenance checks to be carried out on an air source heat pump

Just like a boiler, an air source heat pump needs regular servicing and maintenance to work to its full capabilities. With a series of important, routine checks, you can keep your heat pump operating efficiently and effectively:

•    Make sure plants and other items are kept clear of the unit to allow clear airflow  unobstructed
•    Cleaning the outside coils with a soft brush
•    Listen for unusual sounds within your system
•    Keep an eye on energy bills

If you’re unsure about how to look after your heat pump outside of a service, ask your installer.

What to do if you’re on holiday or away from home

If you’re going to be away from your home for an extended period of time or taking a holiday, you should still keep your heat pump running to maintain its efficiency. The heat pump’s ‘holiday mode’ function will set the unit to run at much lower level so that you will not have to use a large amount of energy in starting the unit back up again from scratch.

When in holiday mode, the heat pump will keep your home at the ambient temperature ready for your return. This not only keep the components of your heat pump working properly, but also protects your home from potential damage associated with temperature changes, particularly in winter.

Your installer can show you how to use the holiday mode function on your heat pump ready for when you take a well-earned break.
