Keeping the house warm this winter
With the temperature dropping, it’s important to know how you can keep your home warm efficiently, without wasting energy or money.
In this article, we share some simple ways that you can heat your home and feel comfortable throughout the winter months.
Get your boiler ready
Having your boiler inspected and serviced before Winter arrives in earnest ensures that it will work as you need it to throughout the season. A service examines the key components of your boiler and is an opportunity to address any issues before they develop.
Having a service annually is also an essential part of most warranties, including the ones we provide across our boiler range here at Baxi. This means that should the worst happen, you can feel protected and supported.
It’s likely that your boiler might not have been used for heating that much after the summer and autumn. In the lead up to the winter months, we always recommend you turn your boiler on, even for a just a short period, so that the system can start working fully and get it prepped for when it’s needed more frequently.

Invest in insulation
Having proper insulation for your home can keep rooms cosy without the need to be turning up the heating. By having quality insulation throughout your property, you can retain its heat, which has the added benefit of saving money on energy bills.
Insulation is used in different ways. For example, uninsulated pipes lose heat as hot water travels from the boiler to radiators and taps. By having foam sleeves around accessible heating and hot water pipes, you can ensure more heat reaches the spaces you want warming up. Similarly, loft insulation prevents heat escaping from out of the top of your property.
If you have a hot water cylinder, consider having a quality cylinder jacket to help keep the water stored within it warmer for longer, and reduce the need for it to be heated up time and again, which could be more expensive in the long run.
Small improvements for maximum heating impact
Even the simplest steps can go a long way in keeping your home warm and comfortable. As well as insulation, consider upgrading your windows to double or even triple glazing where possible and make sure to seal any draughts around them (and doors) to keep the heat in.
Alongside having a boiler serviced, make sure that your thermostat is set to a comfortable and consistent temperature. Everybody is different, but generally speaking, an optimal setting for the winter is between 18 and 21 degrees. Keeping the temperature somewhere in this range means you can feel warm enough without always having the heating on and any lower can be dangerous, particularly if you have existing health conditions. You may also want to look at using timed settings to prevent wasting heat when you’re out.
Tempting though it is (and we’ve all done this at some point), try and refrain from drying clothes on radiators. This causes damp, can block heat from reaching other parts of the room and also means that your heating has to work even harder, which can be more expensive.
