Cylinders

Can I use my existing cylinder when I have an ASHP fitted?

If you’re looking at using your heat pump for heating hot water and your home, depending on your existing system you may need to have a new cylinder installed as well.

This is because current cylinders like the one you might have with your current system aren’t often suitable for the lower flow temperatures that heat pumps work at. Our range of air source heat pump cylinders have a larger coil to maximise heat transfer and heat your hot water quickly and efficiently.

If you have a combi boiler and are looking to switch to a heat pump, you will need a new cylinder as your current heating system does not rely on one.

Alternatively, you may be able to combine this with your new heat pump in a hybrid system, where the boiler heats your water and the heat pump provides warmth for your home. You can also use a pre-plumbed hot water cylinder if you have limited space in your property.

Related FAQs

Will an air source heat pump provide all of my heating and hot water needs?

When combined with a compatible hot water cylinder, an air source heat pump can be a great option for efficient heating and hot water performance.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a Government grant of £7,500 to support with the upfront costs of installing low carbon heating systems, such as an air source heat pump, subject to eligibility. A temporary uplift of £1,500 was also introduced in July 2026 to provide additional support for off-grid property owners.

Do I need to change my radiators for a new air source heat pump?

Because air source heat pumps work at lower flow temperatures than traditional boilers, you may need to make some modifications to your home to ensure it delivers the right level of heating and operates efficiently. This can include upgrading your radiators, amongst other modifications.

Can an air source heat pump work alongside a boiler?

Air source heat pumps are perfectly capable of working alongside a boiler in what is known as a hybrid system. This approach combines the strength of both systems, making for an efficient and reliable solution.
