Using smart controls for summer comfort

Despite warm weather during the summer months, we recommend that you keep your heating system active to prevent issues later in the year, as well as ensuring that you have hot water.

By choosing certain settings on your heating controls, you can stay comfortable and ensure that your heating system remains in good condition.

Using holiday mode when you’re away

Baxi products, such as the AmbiZen smart thermostat, have a ‘holiday mode’ that you can access using the My Baxi app. This allows your heating system to run at an efficient lower anti-frost level to protect the home without actively turning on your heating when you don’t need it.

You can schedule holiday mode to start on a specific day and run for a specific period of time. This allows you to concentrate on enjoying your holiday without having to worry about your heating or hot water while you’re away.

To set up holiday mode, go to the More menu in your My Baxi app and select the ‘holiday mode’ option. Set your departure and return date and the system will take care of the rest by simply putting it into anti-frost mode.

Use controls for hot water only

Depending on the system you have and your appliance, you can turn the heating ‘off’ but still keep it active for hot water. This means you won’t waste energy heating your home when you don’t need to and still have water for showers and household tasks.

Important temperatures to have in mind

It’s worth keeping in mind that while you can lower a boiler’s flow temperature (the temperature of the water leaving the boiler and flowing to your radiators) during the summer months, stored water should still be kept at a safe temperature to prevent the growth of legionella.

Some smart thermostats, like our Baxi AmbiZen Smart Thermostat, can make adjustments based on the inside temperature of your home to maintain efficiency. This can mean that it lowers the temperature slightly in summer or raises it again during the colder periods of the year. On a Baxi Combi 2 appliance in conjunction with a Baxi AmbiZen Smart thermostat, you’ll be able to change the hot water flow temperature as well as set central heating room temperatures on the My Baxi app.

The AmbiZen Smart Thermostat also uses internet weather temperatures based on your location to help manage your energy during the warmer months. This lets you enjoy the summer without having to change your system’s settings.

How to switch off what you don’t need

Modern boilers let you keep the hot water on for washing dishes and other household tasks, while turning off the heating. Electric showers also heat the water internally, so there is no need for the boiler to do the work.

Your boiler has a 24hr pump exercise so even if the heating is off, the boiler will intelligently spin the pump every 24hrs to prevent it sticking. This is particularly helpful in the summer when the heating is usually switched off.
