How do heat networks work?

Heat networks supply numerous consumers with heat that is generated from a central source or sources. This could be an offsite boiler, power station, or heat pump.


The heat is supplied to consumers through a network of insulated pipes that carry hot water to each end-user. A heat interface unit (HIU) then transfers the heat from the network to the property’s heating system, with the cooler water returned to the energy centre through the underground pipes to be heated again and recirculated. This cycle delivers heat efficiently to multiple end-users without the need for numerous boilers, which could cause safety issues, and help facilitate the transition to renewable sources in off-grid communities.
