What are the different types of heat networks?

There are three main types of heat networks: a district heat network, a communal heat network, and campus heating.

 

District Heat Network: serves more than one building (building owners are not necessarily the asset owners).

 

Communal Heat Network: serves a single building, with more than one customer (the building does not need to contain the plant).

 

Campus Heating: both the Energy Centre and connected buildings have the same owner. These include settings such as Ministry of Defence (MOD) camps, large hospitals, and university campuses.

 

It’s thought that approximately 2% of the UK’s heating demand is met by heat networks, though this could be higher. Government figures also suggest that around 8 million people will have their heating provided by a heat network by 2030, suggesting that heat networks are set to play a key part in meeting the UK’s energy transition targets.
