What other components do I need for a heat network?
For a heat network to work effectively, you’ll need to have the following in place:
The energy centre
The energy centre is where the heat is produced. In many cases, this is in a dedicated plant room, building, or off-site facility, that contains the heat source, often a boiler but can also be a heat pump. Buffer tanks and thermal stores can also be located within the energy centre.
Pipework and distribution network
In a heat network, heat is distributed through a network of pipes and supplied to end users. These pipes are usually underground for protection and insulated to minimise heat loss.
Heat interface units (HIUs)
HIUs are located in each building or residence connected to the heat network. These components transfer the heat supplied by the network to emitters such as radiators and replace the need for individual boilers, giving the end users control over their heating settings.
Monitoring and metering systems
Control systems are important for ensuring optimum performance throughout the heat network and maintaining end user comfort.
For building managers, these systems also regulate temperature, pressure, and flow rates, allowing issues in these areas to be rectified before they escalate. The systems can also support with planning maintenance and budget forecasts.
