Can a heat network be used with the existing heating system?
Heat networks often work well with existing systems through a process called retrofitting.
In many cases, the energy source tends to be a single gas boiler, however these can be replace by lower carbon technologies such as heat pumps or by using waste heat from industrial processes. It’s important to keep in mind that an evaluation of the network to assess its suitability for such technology will need to be completed first, and pipework may need to be upgraded in some areas.
Other key parts of making existing systems suitable for use with a heat network include installing modern heat interface units (HIUs) within residences or control rooms, depending on the type of building, and taking into account the current demands and usage. Ensuring new networks effectively integrate with the existing infrastructure and perform efficiently is an essential task.
