Are heat networks expensive to install?
The initial upfront cost of a heat network may at first appear significant.
A phased approach keeps the disruption to residents and the wider community as low as possible and may also support with managing the overall costs.
Grants have also been introduced to help operators deliver suitable outcomes for consumers, as well as manage the costs associated with installing new networks from scratch through the Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF) or optimising existing ones through the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES).
The latter allocates funding for eligible developments to support with reconfiguring components, replacing HIUs, and carrying out installation of pipework and/or equipment. The GHNF also supports with some of these factors, as well as the costs of upgrading existing networks.
Such measures can include:
- Reconfiguration of heat supply pipework hydraulic arrangements
- Heat generation plant controls
- Heat distribution network controls
- Pump replacement or removal
- Pumping controls
- Reconfiguration of thermal storage hydraulic arrangement
- Thermal storage controls
- Insulation of pipework related to heat supply and/or other energy centre/plant
room components.
