Choosing the right solar roof panels for your home

Choosing the right solar roof panels for your homeSolar heating panels on the roof harness free energy from the sun. This renewable energy is turned into thermal heat to provide energy efficient domestic hot water.

There are three main types of solar heating systems:

Types of solar roof panels

Each of the different types of solar heating panels is unobtrusive, easy to install and effective; the choice depends on your individual needs and preferences.

On-roof collector panels are most suited to providing solar heating to existing properties as they are mounted on top of roof tiles or slates, which therefore minimises disturbance to the roof structure. An A-frame option is also available for use on flat roofs.

In-roof collector panels are built into the actual roof structure - making them the perfect choice for new-build developments or homeowners undertaking a major roof refurbishment.

Evacuated tube collectors can be mounted horizontally or vertically on any surface, or as an A-frame, which makes them ideal for existing or new-build properties. This adaptable system offers premium performance in cloudy conditions.

Benefits of solar heating panels

Solar roof panels are able to generate 100% of the hot water needed for an average household in the summer months and as much as 30% in the winter with the balance provided by a conventional boiler or electric immersion heater.

Switching to solar heating panels can result in significant savings, both in CO2 and energy bills. Baxi Solarflo on-roof and in-roof solar panels will be eligible for the Government's Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme.

Number of solar roof panels

The number of solar heating panels you will need relates to the size of the solar hot water cylinder; this is determined by the size of your house, the number of bathrooms and the number of people living in the household. Available roof space will also be a deciding factor. On average, a typical home with a family of four will need two solar heating panels or a thirty evacuated tube collector.

Optional accessories

Even if you do not have a south-facing roof you can still install solar heating panels. A number of optional accessories are available with the Baxi Solarflo to enhance flexibility, including an On-roof East West Array Kit and an In-roof East West Tile Kit. These enable the sun's heat to be captured throughout the day.
