Benefits of ground source heat pumps

Benefits of ground source heat pumpsA ground source heat pump uses pipes buried under the ground to extract stored thermal energy, which can then be converted to provide both heating and hot water for the home. Ground source heat pumps such as the Baxi Geoflo offer a reliable, efficient and long-term heating solution, delivering many environmental and financial benefits.

  • Carbon savings

A ground source heat pump can lower your home's carbon emissions, particularly if it replaces a conventional electric or coal heating system. This makes it an ideal 'green' solution for properties in rural areas where mains gas is not available. Although electricity is needed to run the pump, four units of heat are produced for every one unit of electricity required.
  • Reliable efficiency

By tapping into the natural heat found in the ground below the earth's surface, ground source heat pumps provide stable and consistent energy. The heat is extracted at around 10°C then increased to a level suitable for a home's heating system. Because the heat drawn from the ground remains at a fairly constant temperature throughout the year, the temperature differential is fairly low. As a result, ground source heat pumps are highly effective even in the middle of winter.
  • Lower fuel bills

Depending on the type of fuel you are replacing, the size of your home and how well insulated it is, installing a ground source heat pump can substantially reduce your fuel costs over the long term. Further savings can be made by using an electricity tariff such as Economy 10 as timing the system to coincide with off-peak tariffs will enable the heat pump to work more economically. In addition, as a low carbon heat generation technology, ground source heat pumps will also be eligible under the Government's Renewable Heat Incentive scheme.
  • Renewable energy

Ground source heat pumps draw renewable, i.e. naturally replenished, energy from the earth to produce clean and efficient heating. Microgeneration technology is growing in popularity as a highly effective way of using renewable fuel sources to increase a home's energy efficiency, thus benefiting the environment. Other microgeneration applications include biomass boilers and solar heating.
  • Solar compatibility

When used in conjunction with solar thermal technology, a ground source heat pump can provide a total heating and hot water solution. This helps you to further reduce your carbon emissions and fuel bills. The Baxi Solarflo thermal domestic hot water system is the perfect partner for the Baxi Geoflo.
  • Convenience

Another advantage of installing a ground source heat pump is that you will no longer have to have fuel delivered. Plus, the technology behind it is so simple that minimal maintenance is required once the unit has been installed.
