What is a back boiler?

A back boiler is a small, compact boiler fitted at the back of an open fireplace hearth. It sits behind a gas or electric fire (or in the chimney breast) and provides hot water and central heating to the property.

Despite its compact size, a back boiler is more than capable of fulfilling all heating and hot water needs. Back boilers are reliable too, and allow homeowners to run hot water from several taps at once without issue.

In addition to the boiler itself, a back boiler installation typically consists of tanks in the loft and a cylinder in the airing cupboard. However, homeowners actually save on living space as they don't need to find room in the kitchen for a wall-hung boiler.

Solid fuel back boilers

Solid fuel back boilers are available (as well as gas and oil) - but while gas and oil models work independently of the fire front, solid fuel back boilers are only able to provide hot water when the fire islit.
