There are currently 4.5 million SEDBUK Band G boilers in use in the UK - each running at less than 70% efficiency. Band A boilers, by contrast, run at around 90% efficiency.
Simply by replacing a Band G boiler with a Band A boiler, a single household can reduce its annual carbon emissions by a staggering 1.2 tonnes.
Domestic heating currently accounts for 14% of the UK's carbon emissions, but by offering grants to 125,000 households in England, the scheme could see an overall carbon saving of 140,000 tonnes each year. That's the equivalent of removing 45,000 cars from the roads.
