Details of the Government's Boiler Scrappage Scheme were officially announced in January 2010.
Similar to the Car Scrappage Scheme launched the previous year, it aims to cut carbon emissions by helping homeowners replace old inefficient boilers with new, high-efficiency models. (Why is this important?)
Under the scheme, households currently using a SEDBUK Band G boiler will be able to claim a grant of £400 towards a new SEDBUK Band A boiler and/or a low or zero carbon appliance. Not only will you save money on your new boiler, you'll also see a reduction in your heating bills due to higher efficiency heating.
According to the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC), there are approximately 4.5 million Band G boilers still in use in the UK, but the grants were only available to 125,000 households on a first come, first served basis. All of the vouchers have now been claimed, which means that the scrappage scheme is no longer open to new applicants in England.
The Scottish boiler scrappage scheme is also now closed to new applications, after allocating all 4,600 available vouchers.
The Welsh scrappage scheme is now open to applications. For more information, please visit the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme (HEES) Wales website.
