The Government's Boiler Scrappage Scheme launched in January 2010.
Similar to the Car Scrappage Scheme launched the previous year, it aims to cut carbon emissions by helping homeowners replace old inefficient boilers with new, high-efficiency models. (Why is this important?)
Under the scheme, households currently using a SEDBUK (2005) <70% rated boiler can apply for a grant of £400 towards a new SEDBUK (2005) >90% high efficiency boiler and/or a low carbon appliance. Installing a new, high efficiency boiler could save you up to £225 a year* on your energy bills and reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by up to 1.2 tonnes.
According to the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC), there are approximately 4.5 million SEDBUK (2005) <70% rated boilers still in use in the UK, but the grants are only available on a first come, first served basis.
All of the vouchers have now been claimed in England and Wales, which means that the scrappage scheme is no longer open to new applicants in these countries; however, the scheme is still open to residents in Scotland.

There is an equivalent scheme available in Northern Ireland. The Warm Homes scheme, funded by the Department for Social Development, is for people who receive certain qualifying benefits and own or rent their home from a private landlord in Northern Ireland.
