Boiler scrappage scheme

Originally launched in January 2010, the boiler scrappage scheme is designed to help householders replace old, inefficient boilers to reduce their fuel bills and lower their carbon footprint.

The scheme offers a £400 subsidy to households who upgrade their old SEDBUK (2005) <70% rated boilers to new SEDBUK (2005) >90% high efficiency boilers.

In addition Warm Front can help 75,000 of the most vulnerable households with heating and insulation.

The English and Welsh boiler scrappage schemes are now closed to new applicants, as all of the vouchers have been claimed.

The Scottish Government has extended the scheme to Scottish homeowners who did not get the chance when the scheme was originally announced in 2010. For more information visit the Energy Saving Trust (EST) website.

How can I tell if my boiler is suitable?

The Heating and Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC) have issued guidance to help householders identify if they have a SEDBUK (2005) <70% rated boiler.

For floor standing boilers:

Pre 2002 with permanent pilot ignition

Wall mounted boilers:

Pre 2002 with cast iron heat exchanger and permanent pilot ignition

Combi boilers:

Pre 1998

Back boilers:

Pre 2002

Statistics gathered by the HHIC estimate that there are still 4.5 million boilers in use that are rated at less than 70% efficient. Changing from a SEDBUK (2005) <70% rated boiler to a SEDBUK (2005) >90% high efficiency boiler could save the householder up to £225 per year*. Upgrading the boiler could also make savings of up to 1.2 tonnes of CO2 per year.
