What is the Renewable Heat Incentive?
It is a scheme introduced by the Government to provide payments for generating heat from renewable technologies.
Who is eligible?
The Renewable Heat Incentive is open to residents in England, Scotland and Wales.
What technologies are eligible?
The following renewable heat technologies are eligible with the RHPP scheme:
- Solar Thermal*
- Air Source Heat Pumps
- Biomass
- Ground Source Heat Pumps
When does the scheme start?
The scheme is set up in two phases. The first phase started from 1st July 2011 but was aimed at installations in commercial properties. The second phase is to commence in October 2012 which will be aimed at supporting homeowners and domestic installations.
Will I still be able to receive the Renewable Heat Incentive if I already a system installed?
Any installations that have taken place after 15th July 2009 are still eligible for the scheme, but no payments will be awarded until after the registration of the technology has taken place. Visit the RHI website to find out more information on how to register your appliance.
Is it the same as the Feed-in Tariff (FiT)?
No. The Feed-in Tariff was introduced for microgeneration products where as RHI was introduced to support renewable technologies that produce heat.
Are there any other supporting schemes?
Yes, the Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) was introduced on the 1st August 2011. The scheme is being run by the Energy Saving Trust and will provide vouchers for discounts towards different types of Renewable Heat technologies.
What is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)?
In order to be eligible for RHI, both the microgeneration product and the installer who fits it must be MCS accredited. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) has been introduced by the Government to evaluate the quality of microgeneration products and installers to protect consumers and ensure that Government money is spent effectively.
It is important to check that products and installers are MCS accredited when you consider investing in them. You can locate your nearest one by using the installer search on the MCS website.
