Energy efficiency for dwellings

The national energy efficiency rating - or Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP)

What is SAP?

SAP is the Government's 'Standard Assessment Procedure'. It assesses energy efficiency and predicts heating and hot water costs for homes based on:

  • The size of the house
  • The construction materials used
  • Ventilation and lighting
  • Efficiency and control of the heating and hot water systems
  • Insulation and air tightness of the house

How do SAP ratings work?

A rating is awarded on a scale of 1 to 100. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the dwelling is based on a national standard.

Every new house must have a SAP rating.

Can I improve my SAP rating and save money on energy bills?

A high efficiency boiler is more energy efficient and can produce higher ratings than a traditional boiler - in some cases by up to 10 points.
