Zero carbon

What does zero carbon mean?

A true "zero carbon" dwelling is one where the net carbon dioxide emissions resulting from ALL energy used in the dwelling are zero or better. This includes the energy consumed in the operation of the space heating/cooling and hotwater systems, ventilation, all internal lighting cooking and all electrical appliances. The calculation can take account of contributions from onsite renewable/low carbon installations.

Renewable technologies include solar water heaters, photovoltaic solar cells and wind turbines, while low carbon technologies include biomass boilers, combined heat and power, ground source (GSHP) and air source (ASHP) heat pumps.

Tax relief on zero carbon homes

From the beginning of October 2007, buyers of new zero carbon homes qualify for tax relief on stamp duty. The Government hopes that the tax relief, available during the next five years, will encourage the construction of environmentally friendly homes.
