We are often told that we can reduce our energy bills by insulating our homes - but how much could be saved by replacing an old boiler aged 10 years or more, and how does this compare in cost with installing insulation?
Whilst insulating your home is an effective way to conserve energy and save money, it is not always the most cost-effective energy saving measure. Depending on the age of your boiler, replacing it could offer the shortest payback time and most savings.
What are the savings?
- The average cost of a fully installed, Band A Baxi 28kW combi boiler is around £2000*. If you currently have a Band G boiler (likely to be a boiler aged over 10 years), you could see a saving of £600** per year, meaning a payback time of less than 4 years
- The cost of internal wall insulation is between £5,500 and £8,500 and offers an annual saving of around £365***. Assuming the insulation costs £7,000 (the average of the two costs shown above), then payback time will be just over 19 years
- External wall insulation is even more expensive, costing between £10,500 and £14,500 to install and providing annual savings of £385***. These costs would result in a payback time of 31 years
