Decent Homes initiative

The decent homes initiative was set up by the Government to ensure that all homes meet minimum standards. Social housing in England must meet the following criteria:

  • Be free of health and safety hazards
  • Be in a good state of repair
  • Have reasonably modern kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems
  • Be insulated to a reasonable level

If you live in a home that is rented from a local council or a housing association, you have the right to a home which meets these standards. Your landlord should make improvements to your home so that it can meet these standards.

If you need to complain about any work that has been completed to your home in order to meet the Decent Home Standard, contact your local council.
