Frequently asked questions about heat only boilers
Do I need a hot water cylinder with a heat only boiler?
Yes you need a hot water cylinder, like the Megaflo eco, which is extremely well insulated for maximum heat retention.
Why should I choose a heat only boiler and heating system as it takes up much more room than a combi?
If you have a high demand for hot water, for example you have two or more bathrooms, a heat only or system boiler can provide the hot water you need, because is stores hot water in a cylinder. And if you already have a heat only, or conventional, boiler in your home, you can replace like for like. You would not have to change pipe work and remove tanks and the cylinder, so it should cost less. Remember that you should always have a power flush carried out to clean the system, so you are not fitting a new boiler onto pipework filled with sludge.
One of the unique benefits of Baxi's range of heat only boilers is that they don't require a pump overrun or permanent live. That means the installer does not need to lift carpet and floorboards in order to run wires from the boiler to the pump.
What output of boiler and size of cylinder will I need?
Your Gas Safe registered installer will do a site survey, and find out your specific requirements. Then he can calculate the correct sizes for your system.
What is SEDBUK?
SEDBUK is the national standard for energy performance for heating appliances. SEDBUK stands for 'Seasonal Efficiency of a Domestic Boiler in the UK', and is designed to provide a fair comparison of the energy performance of different boilers. G, similar to those found on refrigerators and washing machines, where A is at least 90% efficient. This method was superseded by SEDBUK 2009, where the boiler efficiency is shown as an annual efficiency percentage. All boilers installed in the UK from 6th April 2011 must be greater than 88% SEDBUK (2009) or greater than 90% SEDBUK (2005).
Can heat only boilers be made even more energy efficient?
Additional savings of £70 and 280 kg carbon dioxide a year can be achieved by installing a room thermostat, according to Energy Saving Trust.
Who can install a new heat only boiler?
