Scottish boiler scrappage scheme now closed

The boiler scrappage scheme in Scotland is now closed as all 4,600 vouchers have been claimed. The scheme provided householders with £400 towards the cost of a new, high efficiency boiler, on a first come, first served basis.

The boiler scrappage scheme in England closed to new applicants in March as all of the 125,000 vouchers were allocated to homeowners.

Both schemes stated that you must replace your boiler with a high efficiency boiler recommended by The Energy Saving Trust (EST). All Baxi SEDBUK Band A rated boilers, including the Baxi Bermuda BBU HE A, are now EST listed, providing you with total peace of mind. Replacing an old G rated boiler with a new, high efficiency A rated boiler could save you up to £235 a year on your energy bills and reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 tonnes.

The Welsh boiler scrappage scheme is still open and will provide up to 5000 homeowners (who are over 60 with working Band G rated boilers) with vouchers for £500 towards the cost of a replacement boiler or a microgeneration technology. For more information, please visit the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme (HEES) Wales website.

Although the English and Scottish boiler scrappage schemes have now closed, it's still a good idea to replace your old, inefficient boiler. For those homeowners with an old back boiler, the Baxi Bermuda BBU HE provides a cost effective, energy efficient solution which is the only high efficiency direct replacement in the UK - it's the easiest and best way to replace your older, less efficient back boiler unit.

Why should I replace my boiler? After all, it still works.

If your boiler has a permanent pilot light or is over 10 years old, it is likely to be G rated. That means it is less than 70 per cent efficient. A new high efficiency A rated boiler is over 90 per cent efficient, which means you will get over 20 per cent more heat and hot water from your fuel. And that could reduce your fuel bills by up to £235 a year. In addition, it will substantially reduce your home's carbon footprint.

How can I tell if my boiler is G rated?

If your boiler has got a permanent pilot (a small flame visible through the boiler panel that you have to reignite manually if it goes out) then it is most likely Band G.

We have a list of G rated Baxi boilers here. We have also included recommendations for A rated replacements.
