Solar panels from Baxi for apartments

Environmentally aware housebuilder Hazelton Homes has installed solar panels from Baxi at an exclusive development of apartments in Anstey, Leicestershire.  The in-roof flat plate solar collectors will provide hot water for all the top floor apartments at the site.

The Baxi Solarflo in-roof panels were incorporated into the roof structure during construction and lie flush with the tiles.  The panels absorb solar energy, which heats a mixture of water and glycol that is sealed into the system.  This liquid is then circulated through a dedicated coil to heat the water in a specially designed hot water storage cylinder, like the Megatech from Heatrae Sadia.

The system can satisfy up to 60 per cent of the annual hot water requirements, substantially reducing fuel bills and lowering carbon dioxide emissions by up to half a tonne per year.  Any extra hot water that is needed can be produced using a high efficiency boiler and the second coil in the cylinder, or electric immersion heater.

Hazelton Homes is installing eco-friendly products at many of its sites, including rainwater harvesting systems and air source air to water heat pump systems.  Richard Hazelton, commercial director, explains: "As a responsible developer, our aim is to protect the environment and lower carbon emissions, with the ultimate goal of zero carbon housing.

"These panels will help us to do this, and help save on hot water bills, which will benefit both the environment and the homeowner."

Baxi Solarflo is also available as an on-roof option for retrofitting on existing properties.  The complete package includes flat plate solar collectors, hydraulic controller, including solar gain sensor, electronic controls and all the accessories to complete the installation.  A Heatrae Sadia solar cylinder can be included or added to the package for complete flexibility. 

As well as Solarflo, Baxi offers a range of renewable energy products: Geoflo, a ground source heat pump package; Baxi Biomass solid fuel heating; Dachs mini-CHP (combined heat and power).  Baxi air source heat pumps and additions to its solar package will soon be available and the company is already working on the next generation of renewable and microgeneration technologies.  New product development is focussed around micro-CHP, essentially a domestic boiler that generates electricity for use in the home while providing heat and hot water.
